Ulcers are open wounds on the surface of the skin which fail to heal. They may occur spontaneously or after injuring the skin. There are many causes of leg ulcers and after vascular surgery consultation, a treatment plan can be made to address these causes. Arterial disease, venous disease and diabetes are some of the most common causes and sometimes there is an element of each acting together which prevents ulcers from healing. Advice regarding dressings, antibiotic therapy and procedures if necessary will be given during consultation.
Medical attention should be sought for all ulcers, especially if they are painful or are enlarging despite treatment.
